  11. Ok,  I know this may sound like a leaflet for Greenpeace etc.  but reading 
  12. this article can save you alot of money!   In about the year 2050,  what's 
  13. left of the UK will look and smell like s**t unless we do something  about 
  14. it   Most of you who are reading this will either be dead  from  radiation 
  15. from VDUs or will of died of old age, but read this anyway!

  18.                                   PAPER
  19.                                   ¯¯¯¯¯
  20. Most  ST  owners who use their computer for things other than  games  will 
  21. have a printer.   Paper is graded in mgs (milligrams).   This is how  much 
  22. the paper weighs per square metre.   Normal listing paper is about 60mg  - 
  23. This costs about £15 for 1000 sheets.   Do this - Buy two boxes of  paper, 
  24. one a low mg as you can find and the other about 100mg.   Use the bog roll 
  25. stuff for listings or printing out articles from STEN etc.  (no  offensive 
  26. Dave,  but  STEN does eat alot of paper) and the good stuff for DTP  files 
  27. etc.   Use condensed print where possible - then you can get about 132 cpl 
  28. (characters  per line).   You will probably have to loads document into  a 
  29. WP  program  first  - e.g.  1st Word (+).   If  you're  printing  out  big 
  30. documents,  don't  bin them after you've finished,  put them back  in  the 
  31. printer and print on the other side!

  34.                                  RIBBONS

  36. A  ribbon  can print out millions (billions?) of characters in  it's  life 
  37. which  should be enough for about 1000 pages of draft or 500 pages of  NLQ 
  38. (at 40 column).   Pictures use up alot of ink because they usually go over 
  39. a line 2-4 times to make it jet black.   Ribbons are expensive - around £7 
  40. for  a  Star 9-pins (LC10,  LC20,  LC200 etc.).   Don't  throw  away  your 
  41. ribbons when they're finished - send them with a SSAE,  a note saying what 
  42. kind of printer you have, and a £1 coin to:

  50. They will return the ribbon to you with jet black ink,  even blacker  than 
  51. when you got it!

  53. There doesn't seem to be any way to re-ink coloured ribbons - shame,  they 
  54. cost £10 - £15.

  59. Padded  envelopes cost about 30p which isn't bad.   If you get lots of  PD 
  60. through the post,  you'll get loads of them.   DON'T BIN THEM!  Just put a 
  61. white sticker of the address and stamp (don't just take it off,  the  P.O. 
  62. people  will see the date stamp and think
